Lake Erie Walleye Fishing Charter based out of Marblehead, OH

June 29th

Leaving the dock in Marblehead on what was forecasted to be the hottest day of the year headed to the South East corner of Kelley’s Island we had a nice breeze that would be gone by the end of our charter.  We had Doug and his son Will, who the trip was a birthday present for, arrived early and we left at 6 am to try and beat some of the heat.  Try as we may, the heat caught up to us in a very short time and cool towels soaked in ice water would be necessary every 15 minutes or so by 9 am.  We managed to get Will his first Lake Erie Walleye casting harnesses and took one more on a bottom bouncer by Kelley’s before leaving there and heading towards Airport Reef.  We were unable to catch any fish there and moved once again toward Kelley’s Island Shoal.  After a quick drift there with no Walleye, Doug decided he wanted to try trolling and we made a quick run back down to where we started.  We ran the usual program of Spoons behind Tru-Trip 40 Jets at 25-45 back at speeds of 2.1-2.5 mph.  Like many other days this season we managed to catch a Walleye before getting all of the rods out.  We could only fish 3 rods per side to stay legal for Ohio’s fishing regulations but it didn’t matter, we maintained a steady pick during the hottest part of the day until finishing about an hour early for the day.  The look on Doug and Will’s face said it all but I asked anyway if they wanted to finish out the hour fishing or call it a day and head to the dock at Channel Grove.  The temperature was into the 90’s and there was no wind, the sun was reflecting off the water and the sweat was flowing.  We pulled the rest of our gear, got the “Erie Breeze” up on plane and enjoyed the wind in our face on the way home.  The air was hot and very stale with a high humidity level that day and a recent bug hatch made for a tough day of fishing but they did great, caught limits and were able to spend some quality time together on a Lake Erie Charter in Ohio. The Walleye fishing wasn’t as hot as the weather but it was still a good day with some new clients that are already making plans for next season.
